The Facts About Massage

What does Clinical Research Say About Massage?

  • reduce stress and anxiety
  • increase flexibility
  • reduce pain
  • increases alertness and productivity

Studies also show that massage can relieve symptoms of many specific conditions, including arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, insomnia, pulled/strained muscles, temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ), chronic pain, lower back pain, asthma, fibromyalgia, headaches, and some gastrointestinal disorders.

When is massage therapy and/or fitness training covered under insurance?

  • Auto insurance companies must, by law, automatically cover massage under a person’s Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage in the case of a motor vehicle accident if massage is prescribed from a physician in the state of Minnesota. Personal Fitness Systems files insurance claims for motor vehicle accident clients. Some plans require the client to pay and submit his/her receipts; Personal Fitness Systems can provide clients with necessary paperwork.
  • Workman’s Compensation may cover massage and fitness training services with a Doctor’s referral within the first 90 days after an work-related accident.  I have had several clients receive both massage and fitness training with a Chiropractor’s or Physician’s referral.
  • In some instances, health insurance companies sometimes cover massage and fitness training with a doctor’s prescription; patients should check with their insurance plans.
  • Often, reimbursable pre-tax plans such as medical spending accounts or Health Reimbursement Arrangements (HRAs) cover massage therapy expenses for a diagnosable injury or illness with a physician’s prescription. Massage for relaxation or stress reduction is not covered.

How Do I Get the Most Out of My Investment in Massage?

Check with your insurance to see whether massage, with or without a referral, is covered under your plan. Also, consider purchasing a massage package, which typically results in a lower per-massage fee. Find creative ways to treat yourself:

  • Host a party and hire a massage therapist to perform chair massage or regular table massage on your guests.
  • Put a massage gift certificate on your wish list.
  • Consider replacing smaller, less healthy pleasures (like daily trips to the snack bar or coffee shop) with massage.
